![]() Of course the new album is more accessible than previous works but I honestly do not see this as a negative point due to the creativity of the record. After several listens I got used to the album and I think the diversity of the record is its strong point. My initial issue with the album was that it lacked focus and the diversity meant that it seemed all over the place, this meant that it will was little jarring to listen to the first time round. Now I want move onto negative points about the album which after extensive listening have faded away. ![]() I have to say that these are arguably the best vocals they have delivered out of their entire career and you can tell that they have put a lot of time in to improving not only the presence of the vocals but quality of the vocals themselves. The main vocals you will hear are from Troy Sanders and Brann Dailor, you will also hear vocals from Brent Hinds as well. This is probably one the reasons why this album is probably more accessible to wider audiences, they're a lot of tracks on the new record that you can sing a long to, which is not the type of songs that Mastodon are known for. Vocals now have a stronger presence then they have done before and you can tell that Mastodon have put time into integrating the vocals with the instrumentals. I've never felt that the vocals of Mastodon were bad in anyway but I always felt that the instrumental aspects took the center stage and that vocals were less of a priority in their previous albums. Probably the biggest difference people will notice with this record is with the vocals and how they relate to other aspects of the songs. However, after various listens I came to appreciate all of songs on the record and see the variety as one of albums strong points. On the first listen, I found that the diversity made the album a little all over the place and unorganised. The track 'Tread Lightly' reminds me of The Hunter, whilst 'Diamond in the Witch House' very much reminds me of their first album 'Remission'. The reason why this album is so diverse is that it pays homage to all of the albums whilst also having its own identity. Once More Round the Sun is arguably one of their most creative and diverse albums. Some fans of Mastodon's early works may very well be disappointed with this new album but as a fan of all their albums I can safely say that this is a worthy entry into the Mastodon discography. Once more round the sun on the whole is quite an easy going record that doesn't take itself too seriously, I hesitate to use the word 'Mainstream' but it does seem like Mastodon will be appealing to wider audiences with this album. After listening to new record a number of times now, I definitely agree with people who say this. ![]() This is where 'Once More Round the Sun' comes in because the new album was said to carry on with Mastodon's new direction. Whilst The Hunter was still recognisably Mastodon, a lot of fans of the previous albums were disappointed with it. The Hunter was different in the sense that was more of a simpler straight up rock record with less of the prog rock elements and the heaviness of previous endeavors. Mastodon had built a reputation for creating complex and heavy material that incorporated the tones of sludge metal with the musical styles of progressive and psychedelic rock. The Hunter was a rather controversial album for a number of reasons, the main reason was that The Hunter was a more mainstream and accessible piece of music in comparison to the previous 4 albums. I want to start off this review by talking about Mastodon's previous album called 'The Hunter'.
